01 / PREMISE

When a machine fails to recognize her, why is she the one who says sorry?

02 / ARTIST STATEMENT

Sorry as a Placeholder explores apology as temporary language used to occupy the space of an incomplete self. A camera detects the viewer, while random-walking particles determine which parts of their body are permitted to appear. Before a particle reaches the body, the corresponding region is filled with the word “sorry.” A generative model attempts to reconstruct the missing person from limited evidence, producing a speculative image that never fully coincides with the original. Here, apology becomes both a social gesture and a computational placeholder—standing in for the self until the self can be seen.

03 / INTERNAL LOGIC
01

Wander

z(t+1) = z(t) + ε
Attention drifts. Wandering becomes measurable.

02

Arrive

τ = inf { t ≥ 0 : z(t) ∈ B }
A fragment appears only when the walk first reaches it.

03

Apologize

e(t) = I(t) − Î(t)
Prediction error distorts the body. Sorry occupies the residual.
